Frosted glass vase with relief figures and birds, Central European design

Central by Design is an archive of Central European design — restless, inventive, industrial, radical, refined. We trace what has been drawn, printed, built, manufactured, photographed and published across a shifting territory somewhere between Köln and Warsaw, from the 1850s to today.Architecture, furniture, typography, posters, books, interiors, objects, photography, product design and visual culture all meet here. Not as separate histories, but as parts of the same dense field of ideas, materials, technologies and people. Central Europe has never been one place. Borders moved. Empires disappeared. Languages overlapped. Artists, architects and manufacturers crossed from Vienna to Prague, Brno to Budapest, Berlin to Warsaw and beyond. Styles collided, workshops became industries, manifestos became buildings, and experiments at the margins repeatedly entered the mainstream. This archive brings those connections back into view. We collect the canonical and the overlooked, the anonymous and the celebrated, the historic and the contemporary. We are interested not only in movements and masters, but in the things they produced: chairs, typefaces, façades, magazines, lamps, photographs, posters, systems. A spotlight on what happened somewhere between Köln and Warsaw, sometime between the 1850s and today.
